Autumn is usually thought of as mushroom season and is certainly the most productive time. However, you should remember that each individual species of fungus has it’s own season. Autumn is just when more of when these seasons overlap.
During the Autumn it is usually enough to visit a suitable location to see what you find. In the winter visit woodland with lots of old stumps and fallen logs that would suit Velvet Shank and Oyster Mushrooms. Many fungi, indeed the majority of edible species, prefer woodland. Some of the woodland fungi grow on decaying leaf litter on the woodland floor. while others have a direct relationship with the trees they grow under .
Trees which are good for mushroom hunting include: Beech, Oak, Birch and Pine .
Take a walk in the woodland this weekend and see what you find.
