Presented by Leslie Primo, university lecturer and guide at the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, City Lit. and the Courtauld Institute
Guests are welcome to attend this fascinating lecture which explores the enduring Western obsession with and invention of the so-called ‘exotic’ or ‘noble savage’, from the ‘discovery’ of Tahiti in 1767. Artists from the 18th century, including Reynolds and Zoffany, through to the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings of Paul Gauguin have bolstered the Western notion of the exotic and the myth of paradise.
